Smallholder farmers’ climate change adaptation practices contribute to crop production efficiency in southern Ethiopia

Climate-smart practices that have added benefits of improving agricultural productivity are an imperative for smallholder farming. However, there few insights into how climate-smart adaptation influence their technical (in)efficiency. Thus, the objective this study was to evaluate impact smallholders’ on crop production efficiency (TE) in Lemo district southern Ethiopia. We used focus group discussion, experts’ consultations and household survey collect data from 600 producers across six rural kebeles. computed farmers’ climate change indices based experts' estimated TE farmers using Stochastic Frontier Analysis. The adopted such as terracing, diversification, improved soil amendment practices, varying planting or harvesting schedules, rotation. farm households practicing more strategies a larger scale were technically efficient than counterparts with averaging 11.31, 8.62, 6.71% major crops, wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), teff [Eragrostis tef) (Zucc.) Trotter] production, respectively. Our model also revealed has positive significant contribution wheat, production. Other key determinants farming experience, education, access extension services, livestock holdings, income. Overall, our suggests policy shift promote effective response while enhancing TE.
